My Novelistic Universe

My novels rarely linger on peaceful lives. They often begin at the very moment an equilibrium breaks.

An unexpected encounter, a disappearance, a long-buried secret, a betrayal, an exile, a war, sometimes sheer chance: it takes very little for a life to change direction.

What interests me is not merely what happens to the characters, but what the events reveal about them. Circumstances expose their contradictions, their fears, their loyalties, their renunciations, but also their capacity to reinvent themselves.

True suspense is born right there.

Memory holds a central place in my writing. It is never a mere return to the past. It is an active force operating in the present.

We are made of memories, forgetfulness, transmissions, silences, and sometimes wounds we can no longer even name. Some characters seek to recover a forgotten part of their history; others attempt to free themselves from it.

Between memory and oblivion, their destiny often hangs in the balance.

This tension runs through my novels because it runs through our lives.

Family bonds, filiation, and love run through all my novels. They rarely appear as certainties: they are confronted with time, distance, silences, wounds, and choices that transform an existence.

What fascinates me are bonds that stretch, snap, transform, or seek reconstruction; what we inherit from those who came before us and what we pass on, sometimes in spite of ourselves.

These bonds thus become revealers of the characters far more than mere novelistic subjects.

Settings carry immense weight in my novels. Morocco, the cities, shores, borders, and the Mediterranean are never mere backdrops: they carry histories, tensions, and memories.

Characters leave them, return to them, search there for someone or for a part of themselves. These journeys shift how characters perceive their own story.

The Mediterranean remains one of these privileged spaces: it links and separates, opens and encloses, making individual lives dialogue with a wider collective memory.

Some of my novels borrow elements from thriller, investigation, or suspense.

Yet for me, suspense is never an end in itself. It serves to reveal human beings. An investigation, a disappearance, a threat, or an enigma only take on their true meaning if they illuminate the deepest motivations of the characters.

I prefer a suspense that reveals over a suspense that merely impresses.

We like to categorize books: psychological novel, thriller, historical novel, romance... I understand this need.

Yet when I write, these categories lose their significance. History merges with the intimate. Suspense meets emotion. Reflection dialogues with action.

I do not seek to belong to any single genre, but to tell stories where multiple dimensions of human experience can coexist.

Each novel develops its own trajectory. I want readers to be able to enter through any book on their own.

Those who read the work as a whole gradually discover correspondences, recurring characters, deepening themes, and inquiries cast in a new light.

My novels dialogue with one another, each bringing fresh depth to those that came before.

I do not regard this universe as a finished territory. Each new book brings an additional voice, perspective, era, or landscape.

What endures are not the plots. It is the questions.

It is around these inquiries that my novelistic universe continues to be built, book after book. It is this universe, far more than the repetition of characters or plots, that connects each of my novels.
